Pimpin on the Plantation

A dazzling array of metaphors and comparisons have been used recently in the wonderful world of sports. Nick Saban very candidly compared shady sports agents to pimps. Jason Whitlock wrote a piece on the USC scandal and said

“Reggie Bush is Kunta Kinte, a runaway slave. The media are slave-catchers, mindless mercenaries crucifying child athletes for following the financial lead of their overseer coaches such as Pete Carroll, Lane Kiffin and Nick Saban.”

This goes hand in hand with Jesse Jackson’s sentiments  that Massa Dan Gilbert was upset because Lebron was emancipated.  O_o wow.

I would like to begin by addressing the Nick Saban comment. Sleazy agents are like pimps, BUT they are not the only ones to blame. The NCAA, universities, coaches, basically everyone who makes money because of the accomplishments of athletes on the field are pimps too. Athletes are expected to dedicate a good part of their lives and simultaneously balance school, which leaves no time for a part-time job. While they do most times receive a free education, I know first hand that you can not survive in college with no money.  Prohibiting a player from receiving a piece of the revenue they helped generate and at the same time punishing them for taking gifts from anyone is ridiculous. I vote stipend be put in place of a couple hundred a month, that way if the NCAA wants to punish players for taking handouts they can say they at least provided a solution.

Now, as for this preposterous new sports=slavery movement, it needs to end

You see an athletes that look like this? Me neither...

immediately. Putting the white coach/owner/manager against the black athlete takes away from the issues at hand. Professional athletes make millions of dollars from endorsements, contracts etc for a sport they chose to play. Slaves received nothing but whippings for doing hard labor for hours on end. While college athletes are bound by NCAA and their respective school’s rules on what they can and cannot do, they still get an education, on some campuses the best dorms, and fancy trinkets for playing in a bowl game. Slaves had none of these amenities so to compare the two is a slap in the face to slaves, not that any are alive today but still.

So in short, let’s keep race out of it and stick to just talking sports. And that’s just how I’m feelin…

CU football players get a stipend, and a nice one too. Can’t remember the figure right now, but I remember I was like dang! Then again, they all drive Expeditions and junk so yeah…they’re getting paid.
“not that any are alive today but still.” <–this made me chuckle.
